HLG/IKB and Arab Investments Ltd. open Berlin’s newest Shopping Centre at Tempelhofer Hafen!

On April 29, 2009 the new shopping mall and service centre at the Tempelhof former industrial harbour has opened.

It is Berlin’s first shopping centre on the waterfront. Berlin’s governing mayor Klaus Wowereit (SPD) cut the red opening ribbon together with Christian Diesen, the developer’s representative, and Dieter Simon, the Centre Manager. Wowereit called the project a “brave investment”. More than 100 Million Euro were invested by HLG (Münster) and IKB Deutsche Industriebank (Düsseldorf) to develop the deserted land which served as a scrap yard at last. Now it has become the flagship of the Tempelhof’s commercial center.

The theme of the center is the 100 years old warehouse, which was reconstructed according to original drawings. Together with its historic dockside cranes, the new built landing bridge, and the event ship “Alte Liebe Tempelhof” it creates a unique waterfront atmosphere. The former magazine is now home of parts of the shopping centre totaling 20.000 sqm of sales area in 70 shops – all fully let. Anchor tenants are Edeka, Media Markt, C&A and H&M.

Connected by a mall an additional new building, containing a car park with 600 spaces is framing alongside the Ordensmeisterstrasse the old building. In the middle of the mall an old road bed was laid as adornment. The thoroughly refurbished original tufa facade of the old warehouse and an original rail road track remind the visitors of the history of the building.

The link to modern architecture is the second new building at the Stubenrauch Bridge with a copper facade depicting flying seagulls. The futuristic building forms a balance to the historic warehouse and serves as entrée to the harbour.

SMV Projekt Solutions congratulates HLG and IKB on the successful grand opening and is proud of being part of this remarkable project as the technical controller of the investor AIL.
